I've been using Tumblr to collate a fantasy iPod playlist, posting a different music track or video from YouTube each day. I now have a steady stream of fellow music lovers following my posts.

I couldn't find anything in the help pages and most online searches drew a blank.

Then I found, almost by accident, the nugget of information I needed: how to install javascript into your Tumblr template, and so I'd like to share that information with you here.

As with all template changes, please, please make sure you've got a back up somewhere first (expand widgets if you're doing such template changes on Blogger) as things can go wrong and be very very hard to recover from. You've been warned! (But don't let that put you off trying altogether).

So in my case, I wanted to install the custom tracking javascript supplied by StatCounter. Here's what you do.

1 - Log into your Tumblr Account.
2 - Click the "Customise" link.
3 - Click "Theme" and then select "Use Custom HTML".
4 - Scroll to the end of the code and paste your StatCounter code JUST BEFORE the

tags.
5 - Don't forget to click "Save Changes".
6 - Log back into your StatCounter account to check that it is recording visits (unless you've purposefully blocked your IP address from being recorded as a visit).

Let's face it, most of us do photography on the side. Our dream or goal may be to make a living at it, at some point in time. But to do that, we have to make a lot more sales. To make the sales we need more customers. To get more customers, we need to promote ourselves.

I'm going to go out on a limb, and make some assumptions. First, I'm going to assume that money is an issue. We can't all afford to run Google Adwords or even take out an ad in the local newspaper. Second, I'm going to assume that your work is nothing else but good. I don't mean good, because your family and friends say so. I mean your work has to impress other photographers (people who know what it takes.) That being said; here are five key ways to promote yourself, (that doesn't cost a fortune.)

1. Enterprise Cards. This is Not an option. You have to have them. Ideally, they should have your name, your picture, the word "Photography" or "Photographer", your web address and your phone number. Notice, I did not say your street address or a list a mile long of every type of photography you have ever done. When I say: "Your Picture", I mean just that; it must be a photograph of you. If you're shy sorry but you're in the wrong business. If you want citizen to recognize you as a photographer, they need to remember you not one of your great shots.

2. A Web Site. In today's High Tech world this is also Not an option. In the old days, if I did "Weddings" for

example, I created a folder that showed my best work and would show it to inherent customers one at a time. Let's say you write 20 articles and submit them to 100 article Directories, that's like handing out 2000 Enterprise cards! 5. Enter Photo Contests. If you submit one photograph to a photo contest per week for one full year, you may or may not make any money, but... You will have publicity. Even if you only win one or two out of your fifty two entries, you are now an award winning photographer! You can use that on your website, on your Enterprise card, or even just talking to inherent customers. A word of caution, some contests have one purpose in mind and that is Not to promote you. Some photo contests will try to sell you photo related items again and again. In other words, this may end up putting your name on a mailing list that you had not planned on. If it is an email list you should be able to unsubscribe from most of these.

Obviously, development a thousand Enterprise cards and setting them on a shelf is not going to help you. Anyone can be creative with a basic camera if they just understand some very basic principles. Capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments requires the complete attention of the photographer.

You simply have to be cognizant of your surroundings by divorcing yourself from the reality of the moment. Concentration is a difficult thing to master since most of us are so entangled in our jobs, families and daily lives that we don't take the time to smell the flowers--much less see them.

I have been directly and indirectly involved in photography for nearly 40 years, but I readily admit that I am still involved in the learning cycle. I hope I never "know it all." The learning process is a journey that delights me every day. A really creative photographer sees life with the same vision that all "sighted" people have. Can you be conditioned to reach that point? I believe you can. How? Well a good starting point is to master the camera to the point that it is merely an extension of your eye. If you aren't thinking about aperture and shutter settings, depth of field, ISO and all of the other complications attendant to camera operation, your mind is free to grasp and absorb the scene around you. As Shakespeare wrote, "Sweet are the uses of adversity, Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, Wears yet a precious jewel in his head; And this our life, exempt from public haunt, Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in every thing." If only we could do that in most of life's situations--find good and beauty in everything: See that precious jewel instead of an ugly, venomous toad. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Look for the good, see the beauty in the simple things. Photographs can document a life. My mother had an clumsy box camera. The only controls it had were a shutter release and a knob to advance the film. I still have some of the black and white images she captured of my brother, sister and me. Many were taken just before and during World War II. She wasn't a skilled professional, she was a mom who loved her children and wanted to preserve the way we were. Well isn't that what we try to do today--capture the moment?

If I had to list the most important things necessary for professional quality shots, they would include:

1. Don't get carried away with your own self-importance. When your only purpose is to please others with your work, your work will improve!

2. Master the camera first. Know what every switch, knob and button causes to happen.

3. Keep an open mind. Overpower the situation--don't let the situation overpower you.

4. Allow your living subjects to just be themselves. Smiles should be natural--not coaxed.

5. Don't meddle with nature. Capture the beauty as it is.

6. Learn and remember that photography can't be accomplished in total darkness. Light has a greater influence on your results than any other feature. Recently I was faced with a challenge.

I have been working as a technical writer and commercial photographer for the past 10 years. I learned digital photography the hard way, I was given a camera and a photo editing computer program, and then they turned me loose. My photos of the products I wrote about were properly lighted, properly exposed and in good focus. There was certainly nothing dramatic about these shots.
